The AI Writing Stack in 2026: Where the Leaders Leak

The AI writing market has consolidated around a handful of names — and every one of them leaks somewhere. Below is the current read from our competitive files on Grammarly, Jasper and Copy.ai: the recurring, buyer-reported weaknesses in each, side by side.

Grammarly

Business tier per-seat jump. G2 reviewers repeatedly flag the step from Premium to Business pricing, billed per seat annually — a wedge for a flatter or usage-based plan. Complaints tied to how Grammarly monetizes are durable — a patch release can't make them go away, only a repricing can.

Extension-bound workflow. Value is tied to the browser/OS extension; users describe gaps in native app and API coverage you can position against. The counter-play is to make leaving boring — importers, migration guides, and an explicit data-out story turn a locked-in user into a switchable one.

Jasper

Brand-voice consistency. Reviewers cite inconsistent brand voice on long-form. The users affected by this gap already know they're underserved, which makes them the cheapest segment to reach with specific messaging.

Dependence on base models. Output quality tracks underlying models the buyer doesn't control. Buyers increasingly ask about exit costs before they sign; a challenger with an honest portability story wins that question by default.

Copy.ai

Credit-based caps. Credit limits push users to higher tiers quickly. This is the kind of weakness that never appears on Copy.ai's own pricing page — it surfaces later, in renewal conversations and review-site complaints, which is exactly when buyers start shopping.

Output quality ceiling. Reviewers note quality plateaus for specialized copy. That's the opening: a focused product can make this single gap its whole identity while Copy.ai keeps optimizing for the middle of its market.

The read for challengers

Read these files side by side and the wedge chooses itself: each of these leaders has trained a segment of its own customers to want an alternative. The challenger's job is to exist, visibly, exactly where that segment is already looking.
