Read the Job Posts: Your Competitor's Roadmap, Six Months Early
Some of the best competitive-intel plays fit in one sentence: “Your competitor's job posts tell you their roadmap 6 months early.” This is the long version — the why, the exact steps, and the failure mode to avoid.
A job post is a budget commitment, and budget commitments precede shipping. When a competitor opens a role, they are telling the market — months ahead of any announcement — where they intend to build next.
Why it works
Companies can spin marketing, but they rarely hire speculatively: a cluster of postings for a specific team means headcount was approved for a specific bet. Titles, required skills, and the team a role reports into all narrow down what that bet is. Because hiring pipelines run long, you typically see the signal one or two quarters before the feature ships.
Run it, step by step
- Step 1. Bookmark the careers page and public job boards for each rival, and check them on a fixed cadence — monthly is enough.
- Step 2. Log every posting: title, team, seniority, and the skills or tools named in the description.
- Step 3. Map postings to product areas. A run of hires with the same specialty is a roadmap line item; a single post is noise.
- Step 4. Review the log each month and ask one question: what would we do differently if this ships in six months?
The mistake that ruins it
Overreacting to a single posting. One job is an experiment, a backfill, or a founder's whim. The signal is in clusters and repetition — treat anything less as background noise, or you'll re-plan your roadmap every week.
